Sacrifices made to give gifts to others

After noticing a large number of kids not attending school due to them being ridiculed for not having necessities such as school shoes, stationery, etc, the Local Government Accounting team at the Provincial Treasury, understanding the importance of education and school attendance, made a not-so-difficult decision.

The team decided to forego their own year-end function and gift exchange for a truly selfless act. They decided to utilise the money that would have been used for the party and the gifts to purchase school shoes and school socks, stationery and gift bags in order to ensure that school attendance is not negatively affected by not having the materials required.

Gearing the team for success, the team also started networking with their contacts in order to collect donated school stationery.

After consultation with the team, they made a not-so-difficult decision.

The team decided to forego their own yearend function and gift exchange for a truly selfless act to rather source much needed stationary and school  items in order to ensure that school attendance is not negatively affected by not having the materials required.

Gearing the team for success, the team started networking with their contacts in order to collect donated school stationery and they even delved into their own pockets to purchase stationary.

“As you know, the Local Government Accounting unit had decided that this year, instead of exchanging gifts and having a year-end party, we would use the money to assist those in need and giving back to the communities that we serve. We noted that there were hundreds of schoolchildren not attending school because they were being ridiculed at school for not having school shoes, stationery, etc. We decided that we would attempt to do something to keep some children in school” said Micheline Fortuin.

Vukani Primary School was elected as the beneficiary school as it is situated in a particularly impoverished area in Phillipi. On the 30th of November 2017, the unit visited Vukani Primary School for the handover.The parents and the teachers at the school really appreciated the visit and the gifts.
