With effect from 1 April 2020, any person wishing to apply for a Senior Management Service (SMS) post in the public service must have completed the National School of Government’s certificate for entry into the SMS.
The training is available online at a cost of R265, payable in advance.
In addition to an applicant having this pre-qualification certificate, the following minimum qualification and experience requirements apply to SMS posts:
- Level 13 – Undergraduate qualification (NQF7) and five years’ experience at middle management level
- Level 14 – Undergraduate qualification (NQF7) and five years’ experience at senior management level
- Level 15 and 16 – Undergraduate qualification (NQF8) and eight years’ experience at senior management level
In the case of an individual who is expected to function as a Head of Department, at least three years of this experience must be with an organ of state. Click here for more information.
